Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1897 – After I wrote in my journal on the fourth, Oscar (Alfred Oscar Lunt) came down after dark the folks came home and brought Della Kendall with them, later Oscar and I went up town. I went in his brother George’s (George William Lunt) home and waited until he unhitched the horse, then we went up to Grandma Sperry’s (Emily Louisa Miller). We sat out on the lawn a while then he went home. I slept to Grandma Sperry’s. Monday I walked out home. Della Kendall spent the day here and we made some ice cream and had a nice time. In the evening Esther (Emily Esther Sperry), Della and I started up town and we met Oscar coming down so he gave us a ride to town. He took Esther and Della to Kendall’s and he and I went riding until about half past ten, he took me in his sister’s place where I waited until he put the horse away then we went up to Burton’s. Tuesday morning I went down to Kendall’s and Esther and I walked out home. Tuesday and Wednesday I stayed home all day. On Tuesday I received a letter from Maud Robbins of Scipio. Thursday afternoon Father (Charles Henry Sperry) came home from town and brought me a note from Oscar. It contained two tickets for the cantata that night for Esther and me so we went to town and after it was over Oscar took us up to Grandmother Sperry’s where we spent the night. I received a letter from Will Tolley. Friday morning Esther and I went down town and then we walked out home. On Saturday I stayed home all day. Last Sunday I wrote a letter to Maud Robbins of Scipio. I walked up town to Sunday School. After Sunday School I went over to the post office and posted my letter. I went up to Moore’s and then up to Burton’s. I spent the afternoon at Moore’s and in the evening Mrs. Burton, Mrs. Moore, Flora and I went up to our lot to get currants. We came back to Burton’s and in a little while Oscar came up and spent the evening. I slept to Burton’s. on Monday I went over to Aunt Emma Hague’s (Emma Elizabeth Webb) and took my music lesson. I wrote a letter to Will Tolley. Towards evening I walked out home. Tuesday I stayed home all day. Wednesday evening Mother (Caroline Webb) and I took a buggy ride up town and back. Thursday I got a letter from Oscar. He went to Salt Lake. Friday I stayed home all day.

Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1897 – On Monday Esther (Emily Esther Sperry) and I called for Zoa Christensen and we all three walked out home. In the afternoon we went up town again. In the evening the Young Ladies Grand Bazaar opened, Esther and I went. Esther had to sing. In the evening Oscar (Alfred Oscar Lunt) took Esther and I to one of their booths and had us take a chance on guessing how many stitches there were in a little dress. Then he took us over to another booth and treated us to strawberry and cake. He took us home from the Bazaar. Esther slept to Grandmother Sperry’s (Emily Louisa Miller) and I slept up to Burton’s. in the afternoon on Tuesday I went down town, I went back up to Moore’s and about five o’clock Mrs. Moore, Flora and I went to town I went to the Opera House where the Bazaar was still going on I had lunch there and stayed while in the evening. Between eight and nine o’clock, Oscar and I went to a concert in the Tabernacle. We came back over to the Bazaar. There was a man there with a phonograph, we listened to three pieces, had some ice cream and drink of lemonade then Oscar took me home. On Wednesday I slept all afternoon. In the evening I went to a dance with Oscar, in the Opera House. at the dance I met a Mr. Angell and danced with him. Later in the evening Oscar introduced me to Miss Ramsey, one of the singers at the concert the night before, we three went out for a walk after coming back Della Kendall and Mr. Angell joined up and we listened to a couple pieces on the phonograph. After the dance Esther and I came out home with Father (Charles Henry Sperry). Thursday and Friday, I remained at home. Saturday I took Della (Emma Della Sperry) and Lillian (Lillian May Sperry) with me and we went up town. Today, Sunday, I am left alone with the children. Father is away and Mother (Caroline Webb), Esther, Melvin (Henry Melvin Sperry), Pearl (Eva Pearl Sperry) and Ruth (Ruth Sperry) are all up town.

1897 – I have at last found time to write in my journal again. On Monday June 21, I walked up town, I slept at Aunt Sarah Abbott’s (Sarah Elizabeth Sperry) home. About nine o’clock in the evening Minnie (Minnie Lamont Abbott) and Maud (Ruth Maud Abbott) Abbott, Stella Taylor and I went down to Aunt Meg Buckholt’s to see Seina Beck. Tuesday I went with Father (Charles Henry Sperry) down to Scipio. We traveled in a buggy and as it was forty miles down there it was seven in the evening before we reached there. We had to play to a wedding dance. We stopped at the Robins Hotel. At the dance I met a lot of nice girls and they were very nice to me. We remained in Scipio all day Wednesday. In the afternoon some of the girls came over to the hotel and invited me to go with them over to Ella Thompson’s, she seems such a sweet girl. They had prepared a nice dinner in my honor and we had a very nice time. I returned to the Hotel and prepared for another dance as some of the people had persuaded Father to play to another dance while he was down there. Thursday we returned home, when in town, as we passed the Drug Store, Father went in to leave Mr. Jenkin’s cornet for him, Oscar (Alfred Oscar Lunt) came out and stood talking to me for a few minutes. Towards evening, Esther (Emily Esther Sperry) and I walked up to town and went to a dance with Uncle Will Sperry in the Little Grande. There wasn’t very large crowd so they only danced a little while then closed the dance. During the dance I quarreled with Oscar which came very near making us play quits. As were going home, Oscar came up and stopped me and we stood talking for a few minutes and came to a better understanding then I left him and went down town and then went out home. Saturday I remained home all day. Sunday Oscar came down and he and father went fishing. When they came back Esther and I rode up town with Oscar. They took me up to Burton’s and then Oscar took Esther down to Kendall’s. In the evening he came up to Burton’s and spent the evening.
