John Rowley and Sarah Wright Family Messenger

Reported by Lorin P. Rowley:

Ray and Marilyn Rowley Jaeger arrived in Salt Lake City, April 16, 1958 from Oceanside, California on a short leave. They returned to O’side on May 3. Ray is in the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, California.

Lorenzo D. (Ren) Rowley, of Fillmore was a visitor at Lucy M. Rowley’s home in Salt Lake City on May 2, 1958. Uncle Ren, as we called him, lived with us in Mt. Home for a short time, leaving there in 1917, after serving time in the Army. This visit is the first we have seen of him since then. He enjoyed visiting with him.

May 2, 1958, Smoot and Blancye Rowley of Bynum, Montana arrived at Mt. Home. They came to Utah to attend the funeral services of a friend, Lee Jesson of Altonah, Utah. May 3, Smoot, Blanche, Edwin, and mother and others went to Mt. Home where the services were held. They returned home the same evening.

Before leaving Mt. Home they went out to the old home where we lived from 1910 to 1953. Mother moved to Salt Lake leaving the house and buildings locked up. They were in bad shape, partially wrecked by vandals and animals. They did get a few final pictures and things before leaving for Salt Lake. They got here at midnight. By 10 p.m., other folks out there had phoned that the house and all had burned to the ground at about 8 p.m. We all felt very badly about it, and mother was especially upset. It is not know just how the fire started.

Lorin and Lucy Rowley Wilcox left St. Helena, California to visit her son Harry Scott and family in Bynum, Montana. They arrived in Salt Lake on June 23, to visit her mother before going on to Fillmore for the family reunion.

Mother and I drove to Fillmore early Saturday morning, June 28, to attend the reunion. We enjoyed it very much. We enjoyed meeting all the fine people there. We regretted having to leave early to come back home. Ralph came from Duchesne. There were Ralph, Lucy, Mother and Myself of our family there. Lorin and Lucy left early in the afternoon to go on to their home in St. Helena, California. They arrived home late Sunday evening. They were all okay.

I was very much satisfied with the progress of the family tree. With one small exception, my part of the tree was complete. All mine and my family group sheets are in. all you other folks, my brothers and sister, please try to get your family sheets in, so by the reunion time next year we will have the tree growing good.

Raymond and Marilyn Jen or were home on leave again. They arrived in Salt Lake July 6th. Ray reported back to Camp Pendleton on August 5, 1958. Their new address is: 2426 Jefferson, Carlsbad, California

A boy, David Howard Rowley, was born May 8, 1958 to Leland and June Rust Rowley. Leland is the son of John Emerson and Florella (Floss) Rowley. They live in Oregon.

A boy, Richard Smoot Nordhagen, was born May 26, 1958 to Richard and Joan Rowley Nordhagen. Joan is the daughter of Smoot and Clanche Hunter Rowley.

A girl, Dorinda Mechem, was born June 21, 1958, to Howard and Verna Joy Rowley Mecham. The baby lived a few hours and died at 11:45 p.m., Saturday June 21, 1958. Graveside services were held Monday, June 24, 1958 at 2 p.m., at the Duchesne City Cemetery. Verna Joy is the daughter of Ralph and Beth Rowley.

A boy, John Lloyd Rowley was born June 22, 1958, to Floyd and Anna Dee Pleazard Rowley. Floyd is the son of Clyde and Lillian Rowley. They live at 7516 Goldenrod Ave., Magna.

Lucy M. Golding Rowley is 85 year young, as of last December 14, 1957. She has 7 boys and 1 girl…40 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren, living.

JAMES ROWLEY AND MARY SHERLOCK FAMILY:
Reported by Rosa Lyman More

Mrs. Walter Lyman More, wife of your correspondent’s son, came from their home in Evanston, Illinois to attend a duo-piano concert given by her daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Wendell Nelson, at the University of California at Santa Barbara, California, March 19, 1958. Wendell is in the Music department at the University. They have both taught music in Texas, Iowa and Illinois, where their concerts were always well received, as well as in Minnesota and Kansas. As Mrs. More returned home she came by the old homerance in Sunnymead for a short visit with me. I came here as a bride in 1898, and my son was born here, so it is home too, for all of them, even for the great-grandchildren.

Barbara Deone More Sondker and her husband Gordon W. Sondker and little daughter, Susan, age 1 ½ years, are at present living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Gordon is with an Engineering Consulting Firm in Chicago, and is sent out on assignments. They will be in Alabama for several months, then return to Chicago. “Deanie” is the second daughter of Walter Lyman More, and a great-granddaughter of Zuriah Rowley Lyman.

Walter Lyman More was recently appointed Vice President-Personnel-of the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway system, with office in Chicago, Illinois.

Mary Lyman Anderson, first child of Zuriah Rowley and Lorenzo Snow Lyman, was born in Fillmore, Utah, October 2, 1875 and died January 21, 1952, in Bloomington, California. Her husband, Amel A. Anderson died March 24, 1957. They had two sons, Charles Alfred and Robert Andrew Anderson.

JOHN THOMPSON ROWLEY AND JANE SMITH FAMILY:
Reported by David S. Rowley and wife, Selma

In the February issue of the paper we made a mistake and would like to correct it now. It is from Irene Jones Peterson: “Gordon, since Sept. 1957 has been with the U.S. Army, first at Fort Ord, and now at Fort McClellon, Alabama. He and Margaret Ruth Lewis were married at Rudley, (reported Rigley) Branch. Gordon was home for Christmas the went to Alabama, Jan. 3. Ruth finished her school term at Rudley College and joined him, March 6th. They are now living at 2202 Gurnee Ave., Anneston, Alabama. There is a small branch of the Church at Anneston, with a new chapel, so Gordon feels right at home. Ruth is soon to join the Church and she sings in the choir! Irene Peterson goes on to say that our little paper is a job and a wonder and that she enjoys it so much and likes to hear how everyone is doing and where they are. May this reporter add that it is a joy to get letters with news in them. I sure wish everyone would follow suit.

Our family surely has good news. In the past 3 ½ months, David and I have become grandparents three times!! On February 9, 1958, our son Jack and his dear wife, Barbara presented us with a grandson. He was born at Victorville, California and weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. They had him blessed in March 2nd and gave him the name of Jeffery Ray Rowley.

Just 15 days later our daughter, Gayle, who is married to Franklin Dee Wareham gave birth on February 24,  to a lovely little girl. She weighed 6 lbs. 13 oz. her daddy blessed her on March 30, and gave her the name of Linda. Gayle and Franklin went through the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1957.

On May 12, 1958, our son, Wayne and very good wife, Annette ??rgeline McAuther, went through the Salt Lake Temple and two weeks later on May 27 a son was born to them. He weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz. His daddy blessed him, July 6, and gave him the name of David Scott Rowley. Both these last two babies were born in Salt Lake City at the L.D.S Hospital.

I forgot to mention in my last report that on December 19, 1957 Gayle went through the Temple and did the endowment work for her sister, Celia Phyllis, who died Sept. 29, 1956 of injuries suffered in an auto accident.

On Monday, June 2, 1958, Fred and Harriet Rowley, Mrs. Sarah Rowley, Mrs. G. A. (Pe??l) Rowley and myself, (Selma Rowley) went to Provo to attend the funeral of Ethel May Bedkett Rowley Beardall. She died on May 29, in Provo.

It was nice to see family members again and chat with them. Seems as if that’s the only tine we get together is on one of these sad occasions. Ethel Jane has a lovely family as does Ruth. Reginald Rowley, who is Aunt Ethel’s second son, and the baby of the family, flew out from Annapolis, Maryland, where he is an instructor at the Naval academy, for his mother’s funeral. He sure looks like the Rowley’s. he is married and has two children.

Aunt Mary Ann Rowley Jones and her daughter, Luella were there, also Manuel, Luella’s husband. Winifred Rowley and his wife, Addie were there. They have five babies now and live in Provo.

Luella and Manuel’s daughter, Rebecca, (Mrs. Neil Adendauh) had a little baby boy (I don’t have the date), at the Dragerton Hospital. He only lived 1 ½ hours. They named him Louis Lee.

William W. and Olive Louis Jones finally got a girl. She was born, May 1, in Salt Lake City and the named her Elizabeth Ann. Such a lovely old name. this young lady is bound to be spoiled and why not, she has five older brothers.

Lenna and Waldo Bushnell and their children came over to Spring Glen to see their mother Mrs. Sarah Rowley, for Easter. Grandma Rowley (Sarah) went to Moab last month (May) to help her daughter, Celia Anderson, who had been in the hospital.
