Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1909 (Monday) – It has been five weeks since last I wrote in my book, Baby (Della Lunt) hasn’t cut any more teeth, but although she is a little timid, she can run across the floor now. My husband (Alfred Oscar Lunt) has been home for a few days. I have been attending a theology class on Saturday evenings, given by Professor Osmond of the B.Y.U., it ended with a social on the tenth of this month. We met at the Tabernacle and adjourned to Pay’s Hall where we had a programme, dancing and refreshments. All seemed to have a good time.

On Sunday the 11th of this month (April) in the evening a program was given in honor of Robert Broadhead, he left Nephi the next day to go on a mission.

There has been quite a number of deaths among the elderly people. I played to the funeral of three of them. On the 4th of April, Sister Linton, on the 7th Aunt Elizabeth Miller and on the 9th Brother Brough, my little boy Alfred (Alfred Oscar Lunt, Jr.) used to call him Grandpa Brough.

Father (Charles Henry Sperry) and Mother (Caroline Webb) spent the day with me on the 7th, it being Mother’s 58th birthday. It is the first time she has been down here since the last of November.

Yesterday (Sunday) I attended parents class in Sunday School, Charles Grace (Charles Howard Grace) gave the lesson, subject “Evenings at Home”. Many beautiful thoughts were brought out. We were told of the danger of our little boys herding cows, having nothing to occupy their minds they are led into sin and vice by a crowd of them getting together. We were told to keep their little hands and minds busy during the day and to surround them with books and games in the evening so home would be the best place on earth to them so they would not have a desire to roam the streets at night.

I am going to try and wash today (19 April 1909) if the electric lights come on strong enough, they have just been turned on a few minutes ago. I have a new motor to try today to run my washer.
