John Rowley and Sarah Wright Family Messenger

The following is just a closing thought, a poem which was written on the funeral program.

A LITTLE STEP AWAY

To close the eye, to fall asleep,
To draw a labored breath,
To find release from daily cares
In what we know as death….

In this crowning of a life,
The aim or end thereof?
The totaled sum of consciousness,
The ripened fruit of love?

It cannot be, for works of God
Are wrought for nobler ends,
An those away continue on
in the hearts of kin and friends.

It cannot be, for they live on
A little step away
The soul, the everlasting
Has found a better day….

Two very beautiful poems were also read at her funeral and we would like to print them here.

THE ROSE BEYOND THE WALL

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God’s free light,
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength,
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice’s length,
And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before;
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing its fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
And make our courage faint or fail?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive:
The rose still grows beyond the wall.

Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will for evermore.

by A. L. Frink

The next poem was read by Brother L. W. Nalder

“She always learned to watch for us,
Anxious if we were late,
In winter by the window,
In summer by the gate!

“And tho’ we mocked her tenderly
Who had such foolish care,
The long way home would seem more safe
Because she waited there!

“Her thoughts were all so full of us–
She never could forget;
And so I think that where she is
She must be watching yet.

“Waiting ‘till we come home to her,
Anxious if we are late —
Waiting from Heaven’s window,
Leaning from Heaven’s gate!

The following is the obituary which was read at her (Mary Ann Jones Rowley) funeral by her granddaughter, LaJoann Nicolson.

“My grandmother, Mary Ann Jones Rowley was born February 16, 1884 in Brighton, Utah to George Crump Jones and Elizabeth Ann Barnes. She moved with her family to Shelley, Idaho at the age of two.

At the age of eleven, her mother passed away and she went to live with the Jane Paul Rowley family. When she was nineteen she married Royal James Rowley, youngest son of Jane Paul Rowley, on December 13, 1903 at Blackfoot, Idaho.

They made their home in Idaho Falls and then Shelley, Idaho. She was loved and repeated by everyone who knew her.

She often went out sitting all night with the sick, with never a thought of refusing when her help was needed. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

For a number of years she served as an active Relief Society teacher, in both the First and Second Wards in Shelley.

She dearly loved flowers and won several prizes for beautiful flowers.

She has been in ill health for several years, with sugar diabetes and heart trouble.

Her sister stayed with her and Royal for several years and then she was taken to the children’s home.

Six weeks ago, while visiting her daughter, Edna at Burley, Idaho she had her first attack (diabetic attack) which resulted in a coma.

Since then, she has been in and out of the LDS Hospital at Idaho Falls until the time of her death, March 27, 1959.  She failed to recognize anyone the last four days, after her last stroke she was paralyzed.

(The conclusion of this obituary is a repeat of the newspaper article, vis; listing her sons and daughters, etc.)
