1945 (Monday) – News came over the radio that President Grant (Heber Jeddy Grant) had died at 3:35 at his residence, aged 88 years. He had been president of the church for 26 years.
He was beloved by all who knew him, humble and anxious above everything to serve God.
I did go to the library once this week as I was house cleaning upstairs. My husband (Alfred Oscar Lunt) cleaned the wallpaper and I did the cleaning and I finished during the week. One afternoon Port (Porty Lewis Gabbitas) and Della (Della Lunt) came in, I looked after the children (Ivy Joan, Gordon Lewis, Larry Lunt, Judith Ann and Ted Lunt Gabbitas) while they shopped, and gave them some dinner.
The library and all church buildings were closed Thursday and Friday in honor of President Grant and many of the business houses closed during time of services on Friday, that their employees might attend the funeral.
President Grant’s body lay in state in the hall of the Church Office building and thousands filed past to take a last look of their beloved leader. The flowers were gorgeous. My sister Esther (Emily Esther Sperry), Sister Eliza B. Smith and I went up about ten o’clock to see him. We went down to the south gate of the tabernacle grounds and stood there close to the gates until eleven o’clock when the gates were opened and, my, what a rush was made to get to the tabernacle and procure a good seat. The tabernacle choir did the singing, and President Grant’s favorite hymns were sung. President George Albert Smith presided and President Reuben Clark conducted, Brother’s Smith, Clark and McKay were the speakers.
