Joe Ben Smith was born in Chase City, Bosque, Texas, United States to Benjamin Hezekiah Smith, age 26. and Mattie Ann Elizabeth Atchison, age 23. He was the 1st of 5 children, and the 1st of 3 sons, born to the couple. At his birth, he was named J.B., but when he joined the military he was told his name could not be initials, so he changed it to Joe Ben. His birth preceded the birth of his siblings: Emma Lucille, Deriot Eugene, Morrice Tommy and Charles Ivan

Mathson, age 64; and Fay Anna Snader, age 53, and Harold Frederick Wilson, age 53; and his step-siblings: Isaac Forest Otto, age 61, Samuel Norma Otto, age 56, Joseph Rollin Otto, age 53 and Dianna Otto, age 49. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Greenwood Snader and Agnes Evelyn Eby; his step-mother, Emma Laura Forrest; and his step-siblings: Twins, Emma Louise Otto and Mary L. Otto
