1945 (Friday) – Sister Smith and I attended the forenoon session of conference, the voting to sustain the officers was different than I had ever seen it and was in accordance with rules laid down by President John Taylor. The priesthood almost filled the bottom of the Tabernacle with some in the gallery, there were at least ten thousand people in the Tabernacle and some in the Assembly Hall. The vote was first by the presidency, standing to sustain with uplifted hand, the president, and his two counselors, then they were seated. Next to the Twelve Apostles stood for the vote, then the Patriarchs, then the High Priests and the assistants to the Twelve, then the Seventies, the Elders, the lesser priesthood and then all the membership of the church from the highest to the least.
This same Procedure was gone through for the Twelve Apostles, the Patriarchs of The Church, Assistants to the Twelve and seven presidents of the Seventies. The new apostle was names: Calvin Cowley.
It was very impressive and solemn, President Clark led in the voting and read the rules to us. We had some good talks. In the afternoon, I remained home and listened over the radio. After church, Shed (Shadrach James Lunt) and Florence (Sarah Florence McCune) came in for a little while.
