1946 (Sunday) – It was Quarterly Conference. Bishop Richards was the visitor and he brought his father, President George F. Richards, with him. There was also another brother who represents the Church Welfare. There was a daughter and Mother’s Meeting at 9 a.m. and this time we were permitted to meet in the Assembly Hall while the Priesthood met in Barrett’s Hall.
One of the main parts of the meeting was a talk by a Sister who is a missionary on Temple Grounds and she pretended we were visitors from near and far and she took us on a trip, imaginary trip, through the grounds and buildings giving a lecture usually used by the guides. It was intensely interesting and I can’t see how strangers can fail to be impressed by things they see and hear while visiting those grounds.
It seems to me the theme was a continuation of our late Conference. The leaders are concerned about neglect of our people. Bishop Richards said they only about 45% have prayer in the home, he eulogized his Father and his loving watch care over his family, remembered whenever he was ill his father would administer to him and he always got better, spoke of the power of man holding the priesthood has because if they will have faith and by the power the priesthood which they hold, will rebuke their sickness, they will get better. He was so thrilled over the young folks taking part in the services, young boys doing praying and much of the singing, some returned missionaries, boys and girls gave talks, one gave part of the poem about the crossroads, how one boy reached the crossroads in his life and found two roads, one leading up, the other down and because there was no on there to point the way, he should go, he took the wrong road and was lost, but when another boy came, there was a guide pointing out the road to take and he was saved. Brother Richards said we are the guides to point the way and even if parents are neglectful, we should try and help. The parents may claim the body of the child, but he or she is God’s child after all and we have a responsibility towards them because of that.
