Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1946 (Thursday) – Esther (Emily Esther Sperry), Lillian (Lillian May Sperry) and I went down to Spanish fork on a bus to attend a wedding reception of Maurine (Jane Maurine Snell) and Clyde (Clyde Albert Swenson). It was in the Church, they have a lovely Church. We visited at Lindsay’s until time to go, helping is a small way, wrapping gifts for the bridesmaids, etc. Lillian and Esther pressed some of the clothes needed, then we three went down town for some lunch. At the Church, tables were set, small ones, in the amusement hall, they called it the dining room, a lovely wedding cake was the center of attraction there.

Some photographers were there taking pictures of Clyde and Maurine, etc.

People began to arrive before they were through, then the bride and groom, bridesmaids and flower girl, etc. together with the parents and other relatives lined up just below the pulpit and people began to march up to greet them, for a whole hour a long line of people marched past those greeting then and then down another aisle and into the dining room. There were hundreds of people

Two classrooms were in use, one for the trousseau the other for the gifts. It was surely a sight I had never witnessed before. In one room were all the pretty things, clothes, etc. She had prepared negligees , house coats, slippers, slips, hanky’s, etc. all the lovely things Ruth (Ruth Sperry) had made or possessed, had kept for Maurine. Maurine made the top for a quilt, and the quilt had been finished, little gifts that had been given to her, some silk he had brought home was used to make pretty clothes.

The wedding gifts were lovely. A large rocker, two floor lamps, two table lamps and two small bedroom lamps, some silverware, a lovely mirror, pictures for the wall, two electric mixers, four electric toasters, an electric roaster, and flat iron, ten blankets, two pillows, two or three down quilts, cooking utensils, glassware vases, etc.

Maurine looked lovely. Her husband looked splendid. Also, he has a twin brother (Cleve Hyrum Swenson).

Maurine was a bit fussed but seemed to enjoy all who greeted them.

After ten o’clock, Howard (William Howard Allen) and Maxine (Maxine Carter) came in, they drove down to take us home and did we appreciate it.

We watched them cut the wedding cake and had a piece of it and it was delicious.

We reached home at one o’clock.
