Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1946 (Monday) – I spent most of the morning uptown shopping, have over half of my Christmas shopping done now, but I wonder if I will be able to send the packages. Right now our country is surely a mess, a coal strike, in which John A. Lewis is defying the U. S. government and by the strike, he called is tying up business all over the country. People without coal for keeping themselves warm, business places everywhere without heat and schools threatening to close down to relieve the situation a little. Miners laid off and Christmas so near, it will certainly be hard on their families. It seems so strange that one man can have so much power. He has been called to court for contempt of court and has been fined $10,000 and the Union over a million dollars. In his picture in the newspaper, just as he left the courtroom, he looked pretty sour.

Evening – I went to an officers and teachers meeting in the Chapel for a little while, gave my report and then went into the Relief Society Room to a meeting of the Daughters of the Pioneers. The program was very interesting.

Refreshments were served and a drawing of numbers for gifts. I received a lovely flower for my coat.

I knit three hot pads out of yarn in combination of colors white, red and blue. Sister Hunter received mine, I don’t know who prepared the gift I received. I worked at the Library for about three hours.
