1946 (Monday) – I attended the funeral of Sister Smith’s (Alice Ann Kimball), wife of President Joseph F. Smith (Joseph Fielding Smith) and mother of Andrew K. Smith (Andrew Kimball Smith) and others (Alice May, Charles Coulson, Heber Chase, Sr., Lucy Mack, Jesse Kimball and Fielding Kimball Smith). There were lovely floral pieces. On the stand was President David O. McKay (David Oman McKay), President George F. Richards (George Franklin Richards) and Apostle Joseph Fielding Smith of the General Authorities. Bishop Hinckley officiated. Music was furnished by a quartet from the Tabernacle Choir. Male, accompanied by the leader of the choir; violin soloist, accompanied by his wife; song by Jessie Evans Smith and two numbers by Harry Clark. President Richards was the main speaker, although there were other speakers among them, Sister Fox and Sister Beesley. The services lasted almost two hours.
Afterwards, I went to town. Evening, Earl (Earl Sperry Lunt) took me out to the infirmary to see Cleo Reed. She has been very ill but is feeling some better. There is five or six beds in the ward. Relatives of the lady on Cleo’s right brought a Christmas tree and placed on a table in the corner and trimmed it up very nice, although they had no lights, still it made a pretty picture for the invalids to look at.
Afterwards, we rode up to Howard Allen’s (William Howard Allen) to take Lillian’s (Lillian May Sperry) gift. Found out Agnes (Agnes Coalter Golightly) had phoned to say she and Bert (Charles Gilbert Lunt) were waiting at home, so we had to hurry back.
They had brought down some gifts for Christmas and received some gifts that were under the tree.
