1947 (Sunday) – Attended an early session of Quarterly conference in the Assembly Hall, it was Mother’s and Daughter’s meeting. It was very interesting. Sister Florence Smith was the visiting Sister. She gave a fine talk, an appeal to all to keep themselves clean from sin, said if our desks were all cluttered, we would remove the trash to make room for the material we need to work with, just so we should clear all the trash from our minds to make room for the good things of life. Sister McMaster and her daughter sang a couple of duets, it was lovely.
Later the brethren joined us and conference continued. Brother George Ashton gave a splendid talk. I was especially interested because he talked of Nephi. Told how he is working there, now in charge of a rubber plant that has been brought there from California, as they were anxious to find a place where they can do business where there will not be constantly having strikes. They had heard that the Mormon people stood for honesty in labor, etc., so decided to establish their two million dollar plant here.
Brother Ashton said it is a challenge to our church.
In the afternoon Esther (Emily Esther Sperry) and I went up to the University to the Passion Play. We enjoyed it very much. I was too tired sitting to go to meeting in the evening.
