Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1947 (Wednesday) – In the afternoon, George (George Thornton Holman) took me up to see Eva (Eva Ruth Lunt). She was looking and feeling fine for so soon after a major operation. Afterwards, I went down to Esther’s (Emily Esther Sperry) to get the little hat she had made for me. Evening – Sister Smith and I went down to the 17th Ward Chapel to a program, later upstairs to a dance. It was sponsored by The Sons and Daughters of the Pioneers. I wore the dress Esther had made me, it was of dotted swiss material with blue flowers and some red dots, trimmed with red buttons and red ribbon and some rushing, white with red edge. It was made after a fashion of 1844, with a cute hat made from same material trimmed with band of red ribbon and long red satin ribbon strings., sort of a peekaboo type. It had been a long time since we had been to any such occasion and we enjoyed ourselves.

Sister Smith had made herself a costume, and a cute little hat, she wore her hair down in ringlets. We got all kinds of compliments, some said we were the bells of the ball, not by the amount of dancing we did, but the way we looked. Flora Smith clinger stood among some of the younger folks and she said they all said we looked the nicest on the floor during the grand march. Anyway, it was a new experience and we enjoyed it. Nearly every person that spoke to us told us how cute we looked (imagine telling old people like us such a thing).
