FAMILY NEWS AND HIGHLIGHTS:
JOHN THOMPSON ROWLEY AND JANE PAUL:
Reported by Mr. and Mrs. Smoot Rowley
Last February Ray rejoined the Army – in a Helicopter Unit this time. He took his basic in San Francisco then after a furlough at home where he helped us move to Choteau, he went to Fort Eustis, Virginia quite a few miles from Washington D.C., where he goes most weekends to attend Church with the twin and have dinner with them. He is an instructor.
As I mentioned in the above paragraph, we moved to Choteau the latter part of March as Smoot was going to sell Chevys, and his boss persuaded him that it would be better if he were close, in case it was necessary for him to talk long hours to a client, and Smoot wanted to. We have a very nice house, with a big living room, and modern conveniences. The bedrooms are small, but we can surely get along after being crowded as we have been for so many years. Of course we still have lots of stuff out at the farm. Thank goodness for that house out there. I don’t know what I’d do if I had to bring all that in here. We have no basement or shed or even a garage so there is no storage space.
Smoot didn’t prove to be a very hot salesman, and now that he has to go on a straight commission, he is going to try for some other kind of work. Maybe carpentering, now that his arm has just about quit bothering him, for months he couldn’t lift his right arm without help from the other one. He wouldn’t go to a doctor wither, so we never did find out just what the trouble was. I’m still having nasty headaches, but we must all have something to make us appreciate the good things of life.
Dell took up swimming and diving during the summer and sis well for the team he was on. Even won a gold medal for diving. He hasn’t been able to make up his mind what to do after graduating. He had thought of trying for a sport scholarship, but after getting his back hurt in football one evening he decided against that. So the question is still a question. He is president of the Senior class of the Student Council, and either Band or Chorus, but is Vice President of the other. Everyone seems to like Kim. We have surely been lucky with our children.
The twins were home for a couple of weeks, then we took them to Utah for a flying visit to the immediate relatives and then put them on a plane for home, which they reached in about 11 hours from the time they left Salt Lake . leo got a short furlough and joined us at Salt Lake for a little visiting, then we had to leave. He is stationed at El Paso and is now an instructor in a Missile School.
Joan and family are now in good health. She is planning on presenting is with another grandchild a few days before Christmas. They have now bought a nice little house right in the center of town, very convenient to his job and quite close to school.
Florence and family went to Washington for two months with their donkeys, but the Park where they were did not prove to be so popular and then hot water started coming up out of the ground and running into the lake ruining the fishing, so they came home to Shelby. She is working part time and Bill is still doing carpenter work. They are fairly healthy.
