Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1947 (Sunday) – Georgetta (Georgetta Marie Lunt) and I went to Mothers and Daughters Meeting in the Assembly Hall at nine o’clock. Earl (Earl Sperry Lunt) and Chuck (Charles Mayhew Astle, Jr.) went to Priesthood Meeting at Barrett Hall. We remained on through conference, it was very interesting. The basketball boys from the 19th Ward, who won the Salt Lake Championship, were on the stand, also a group of Boy Scouts who had won some kind of honors, some trophies were displayed on the piano pertaining to basketball. One of the 19th Ward boys prayed and three spoke, one of them gave a challenge as to whether we as a people in some way were responsible for this past war and the dreadful conditions in the world to this day, this challenge was taken up by the two speakers, one from the welfare committee and the other from the seven presidents of seventies (Brother Hunter). The agreed we too were partly to blame for conditions today for if we would love the Lord with all our heart and soul and our neighbor as ourselves, which is God’s law, then at least we would not be partakers of the calamities in the world but would be protected by the power of the Lord and if the people of America would worship the true and living God, and Jesus, whom He sent, there would be no need to worry for great promises are made to this nation, that no conquering people would come to rule here and America should be free, but we are not serving God as we should, as a whole, only a small percent pay an honest tithing, many break the Sabbath Day and fail to keep it Holy, many of our young girls and boys are immoral and so many of us have our minds centered on gaining the things of this world, too many fail to have family prayers in the home, etc.

When one thinks of these things and remembers that in the beginning of this church, God revealed His law to the church, which if kept, would have saved them from all the tribulation they had to go through and Zion would have been redeemed even then, if this was so with them. Then what terrible trial before the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thought I was going to have the bunch to lunch, but Earl went over to the Nelson’s for his, Eva went out to Holman’s and Chuck’s folks (Charles Mayhew Astle, Sr. and Rose Lorena Bolton) came and got he and Georgetta, which left me all alone as Dad (Alfred Oscar Lunt) was asleep, and I laid down and had me a good nap. We’ve been going to bed quite late for quite a while which makes me quite sleepy during the day.

Evening – I attended Conference in the Assembly Hall, some young folks were given the first chance to talk and then Brother Hunter took up the balance of the time.
