1947 (Thursday) – Received some insurance money, went to bank to cash the check then up to L.D.S. Hospital to finish paying hospital bill, rode street car downtown and went to Boston Building to pay $25 on the doctor’s bill. Called in market, saw some crab apples bought a few and later in the day decided to make the apples into preserves. Had to go down to Paul’s store for parowax, when I reached the street to cross over, I paused and looked up and down and over in all directions and there wasn’t a car in sight. I thought “well I guess I can cross the street in perfect safely unless that bicycle way up the street decides to run me down and laughed at the thought. It was so far up the street, Besides I thought the driver would watch a little for pedestrians, so I hurried across, was within about two or three steps of the curb when I found myself all doubled up in the street, and I thought “it’s can’t be, that wheel surely didn’t strike me”, but looking up I saw the bicycle lying there with a young boy tangled in it. A Sister came and helped me to the curb, others carried the boy to the lawn, when asked if he didn’t see the lady crossing the road, he said “no, I was looking at something else.” A car came up and took me back home, we recognized each other. We used to attend Brother Billings bible class. Sister Ward hurried up to Edna’s (Edna Viola Nelson) to tell Lillian (Lillian May Sperry) and they both hurried down home. It must have struck my left leg, the one that has bothered me since 1915, when I had phlebitis. It began to swell but Edna put cold packs on until the swelling went down, it relieved me. I have never had such terrible pain in my life as I suffered with that leg. I was skinned on both elbows and a little on the right knee. We didn’t find out who the boy was, but he was taken to the emergency hospital.
