Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1897 (Tuesday) – In the afternoon Arthur (Arthur David Sperry) and I went up town. I went over to Aunt Emma Hague’s (Emma Elizabeth Webb) and took my music lesson. I went over to Grandma’s (Emily Louisa Miller) where Arthur was waiting for me and we came down home. After school Melvin (Henry Melvin Sperry) came home and brought me a note from Mrs. Burton. It said:

                                                                                                  Tuesday Morning

Dear Jeanette:

Esther (Emily Esther Sperry) gives a small party this evening in
honor of her brother Art and Mr. Mangum and so we wish you
and Art to be here early. Your heart’s desire will be fully realized
in meeting him, fetch the song: Just Tell Them That You Saw Me.”
In haste.

                                                                                    Mother Burton

Just after dark Art and I walked up town. When we got there we found Mr. Mangum and Della Kendall (Adella Kendall) already there. Later in the evening Oscar Lunt (Alfred Oscar Lunt) came up. We played cards for a while and then had supper. In our napkin was a conundrum mine was “Why is a carroty lady like an army of soldiers?” Answer: Because they both bear fire looks. The conundrums were hard to guess so most of us had to pay a forfeit which led to playing some games, like we used to play when we were kids. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Art and I stayed up to Burton’s all night.
