Journal: Jeanette Sperry

1947 (Sunday) – Attended Sunday School at ten o’clock the wards are meeting separately today. We had quite a nice large crowd. Both adult classes met in the Relief Society and there wasn’t near enough room for the crowd. Brother Mortenson conducted the class, but hinted it might be the last time. He looked so queer, years older, because he is raising a beard for the centennial.

In the afternoon Della (Della Lunt) phones to see if I had any pictures Ivy Joan (Ivy Joan Gabbitas) could use for her scrapbook of the centennial. It was the first time we had heard from them over the phone since the telephone strike. Ivy Joan came in with her daddy (Porty Lewis Gabbitas) as he went to work. She chose her pictures, it is part of her school activity, she had dinner with us and I walked over to the bus with her. I walked down to Esther’s (Emily Esther Sperry) and went over to church with her. Our meeting begins at five thirty and we have to be out of the meetinghouse by seven o’clock so the North 17th people can come in for their meeting.

Eddie Robbins gave the first talk on lesser priesthood work, telling how the priesthood was restored. The second speaker was a young man who was called on a mission to England, etc. and accompanied Elder Benson on his trip there to take charge of the missionary work over there and organize and get the work started over. As this young man talked about conditions over there and the pitiful plight of the people over there, tears ran down his cheeks. There was a large crowd present and all seemed to be greatly moved over the report received.
